Gentari Targets 10-20% RE Capacity from Malaysia as Data Centre Demand Surges
English
- Malaysia's RE contribution: Gentari Sdn Bhd expects Malaysia to contribute 10-20% of its total renewable energy capacity over the next 5-10 years, up from less than 3% currently
- Global portfolio: Gentari has accumulated 9.1 GW of installed and under-construction RE capacity globally, with approximately 80% in solar
- Current Malaysia capacity: 257 MW operational plus a 150 MWp Large-Scale Solar 5 (LSS5) project in Kuala Muda, Kedah expected online in 2027
- Data centre demand driver: TNB projects data centres will require at least 5 GW of capacity by 2030, creating massive demand for green electricity via the CRESS scheme
- Policy enablers: Malaysia's supportive frameworks — CRESS, CREAM, Solar ATAP, and the utility-scale BESS programme — are enabling Gentari to expand domestic projects
- Gebeng solar farm: Gentari's 10 MW plant in Gebeng, Pahang (commissioned January 2014) has generated over 125 million kWh, reducing approximately 83,745 tonnes of CO₂
- Repurposing strategy: With the FiT contract expiring in ~8 years, Gentari plans to repurpose the Gebeng site under newer policy frameworks like CRESS
- Grid bottleneck: Grid capacity remains the most pressing constraint; TNB's RM43 billion grid modernisation (2025-2027) is expected to enable greater RE penetration
