Malaysia Launches 'Solar Atap' Programme to Boost Rooftop Renewable Energy
English
- Launch Date: The Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme (Solar Atap) officially commences on January 1, 2026.
- Successor Scheme: This initiative replaces the former Net Energy Metering (NEM) scheme, which concluded on June 30, 2025.
- Application Process: Guidelines will be available on the Energy Commission website on December 31, with applications opening via the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (Seda) on January 1.
- No Fixed Quota: The programme launches without a fixed quota, though the government reserves the right to implement caps if grid stability is compromised.
- Energy Credits: Participants can feed surplus energy back to the grid for credits; rates are pegged to market prices (system marginal price for non-domestic, prevailing energy charges for domestic).
- Capacity Limits: Single-phase homes can install up to 5kW, while three-phase homes see capacity increased to 15kW. Installations can reach 100% of maximum demand.
- National Goals: The programme aims to accelerate clean energy adoption, supporting Malaysia's target of 70% renewable energy capacity by 2050.
