Malaysia Must Fix Charging Gaps and Lower Costs to Boost EV Adoption Says Faizal Azumu
English
- Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, Bersatu vice-president, said Malaysia's EV ambitions will remain out of reach for many ordinary Malaysians unless the country addresses inadequate charging infrastructure and high ownership costs
- He highlighted that the national blueprint set a target of 10,000 public charging points, but by late 2024 only around one-third had been installed, unevenly spread across the country
- Charging infrastructure continues to be concentrated in cities where early adopters are already based, leaving rural areas, smaller towns, interstate highways, and especially Sabah and Sarawak underserved
- Ahmad Faizal called charging infrastructure the nation-building infrastructure of this generation, comparing it to rural electrification and the North-South Expressway
- Existing government incentives — duty exemptions and road-tax holidays — have primarily benefited early adopters from the top income bracket rather than average consumers
- He called for more targeted measures: support for genuinely affordable EV models, local assembly, used-EV financing, battery-warranty assurance, and home charging
- Pointing to Tesla's entry under the Battery Electric Vehicle Global Leaders Initiative, Ahmad Faizal said the model of private capital building charging networks in exchange for market access should be replicated
- He urged incentives for property developers, shopping malls, hotels, petrol stations, industrial parks, local councils and highway concessionaires to expand charging infrastructure
- Three immediate priorities: accelerate national charging rollout toward underserved areas, stronger incentives for affordable EV ownership and local assembly, and a single fast-track approval mechanism across ministries
