Malaysia Unveils Solar ATAP: A New Era for Rooftop PV Net Metering

- New Program Launch: Malaysia officially introduced the Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme (Solar ATAP) on January 1, 2026, succeeding the previous net energy metering (NEM) scheme.
- Capacity Limits: Non-domestic consumers are capped at 100% of maximum demand or 1 MW; domestic consumers are permitted between 5 kW and 15 kW.
- Contract Tenure: Participating systems receive a 10-year contract period for grid export offsets, after which systems transition strictly to self-consumption.
- Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must be registered with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and cannot currently participate in existing SelCo or NEM programs.
- Flexible Financing: Consumers can participate through direct purchase (cash/loans) or by signing Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with Registered Solar PV Investors (RPVI).
- Scope: Primarily targets rooftop PV, but extends to solar carports and covered walkways located on the same premises.
