Malaysia Updates Rooftop Solar Offsetting Rules to Enhance Energy Fairness
English
- Offsetting Capabilities: Households and low-voltage users under the NEM 2.0 scheme (2019-2020) can now use generated solar energy to offset both energy and non-energy electricity charges.
- New Tariff Structure: Effective July 1, 2026, the electricity tariff is split into energy and non-energy components (network and capacity charges).
- Industrial & Commercial Limits: Medium and high-voltage users under NEM 2.0 can offset up to 25% of network and capacity charges; NEM 3.0 commercial/industrial users offset via the system marginal price.
- Incentive Adjustments: Energy efficiency incentives and other discounts are being recalculated to ensure equitable treatment for all electricity consumers.
- Standardized Settlement: The settlement period for all rooftop solar programs is now standardized to 12 months to improve user bill management.
- Strategic Goal: These measures support Malaysia’s target of reaching a 70% renewable energy mix by 2050.
