Malaysia Mulls Mandating EV Importers to Support Charging Infrastructure
English
- Proposed Mandate: The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) is considering requiring Completely Built-Up (CBU) electric vehicle importers to contribute to the deployment of public charging stations.
- Strategic Goal: This policy aims to accelerate the expansion of charging infrastructure to support rising EV adoption across Malaysia.
- Charging Targets: The government targeted 10,000 public chargers by the end of 2025 (1,500 DC fast chargers and 8,500 AC chargers).
- Performance Update: As of December 31, 2025, 5,624 units were installed (56% of the target). DC fast chargers have exceeded targets (1,923 units), while AC chargers remain behind at 3,701 units.
- Cost Efficiency: Minister Johari Ghani emphasized that home charging is significantly cheaper (RM13–RM34) compared to public DC fast charging (approx. RM90) for a standard 60.22kWh battery vehicle.
